A Couple of Waterfall Hikes, close to Hiawassee.
High Shoals and Blue Hole Falls
Hike down a steep path to get to High Shoals Creek
walk about a mile down stream through deep woods, and walk bridges crossing small rushing creeks. The first observation platform.
is Blue Hole Falls. The trail continues to High Shoals Creek Falls
as you approach the falls, the incline becomes steeper. The State Park has installed wooden steps to make the climb easier.
This has also protected the under story that grows from the rocks. The climb for this short stretch can be rated as strenuous
but our 3 year old had no trouble with the walk, soon you'll come to the second
observation platform. From high up the mountainside, High Shoals Creek shoots out of the laurel and hemlocks as a 50' long
cascade that drops into a 40' fall down the rock face.
From Hiawassee, Go south for about 9 miles on Georgia Highway 17/75, Turn left onto Indian
Grave Gap Road, graveled Forest Service Road 283. Follow this road 1.5 miles to a small parking lot at the trail head on the
left. The road fords a fairly shallow stream close to the beginning.

stretches into Fontana Lake. The loops range from 6.5 miles to 11.9 miles. These trails rated as "most difficult", are especially
popular to mountain bikers. While hikers may travel the trails on any day, the bikers and equestrians are kept seperated by

Joyce Kilmer, In this most beautiful,
unmarred, and natural setting, that was the uncharted hunting ground of the Cherokee Indians, virgin trees grow more than
100 feet tall and some 20 feet around the base. Many of the huge trees are hundreds of years old. In addition to the trees
there is an outstanding variety of shrubs, vines, ferns, mosses, lichens, liverworts and herbaceous plants. In the spring
wild flowers take advantage of the sunlight which will not be available after the hardwood trees are covered with shade-producing
leaves. The Memorial Forest, comprised of the huge poplars, giant red oaks and magnificent hemlocks, as well as many other
varieties of trees, is maintained in its primitive and natural state. No plants living or dead may be cut or removed.
Walking trails inside the Memorial Forest are suitable
for all ages. There are more than 60 miles of hiking trails in this 14,000 acre wilderness area of Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock
Wilderness that follows the mountain streams, misty waterfalls, flowing cascades, over bold, sharp peaks and ridge tops. The
longest trail through the Memorial Forest winds through the Forest to the site of the largest of the virgin trees still standing.
